Definition

"Refugees are foreign persons granted refugee status either at the time of admission or before admission. This category therefore includes foreign persons granted refugee status while abroad and entering to be resettled in the receiving country as well as persons granted refugee status on a group basis upon arrival in the receiving country ports." "Asylum is a form of international protection given by a state on its territory. It is granted to a person who is unable to seek protection in his / her country of citizenship and / or residence, in particular for fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion." E.g. Eurostat: the statistics are based on administrative sources and are supplied to Eurostat by statistical authorities, home office ministries / ministries of the interior or related immigration agencies in the EU Member States.

For most European countries Euostat provides the latest numbers of asylum applicants on a monthy basis (availability of last month's data: two weeks), e.g.:
